Inflation :: essays papers
Inflation Hyperinflation The term "hyperinflation" refers to a very rapid, very large increase in the price level. Measurement problems will be too minor to notice on this scale. There is no strict formal definition for the term, but cases of hyperinflation tend to be expressed in terms of multiples rather than percentages. "For example, in Germany between January 1922 and November 1923 (less than two years!) the average price level increased by a factor of about 20 billion." Some representative examples of hyperinflation include "Hyperinflation 1922 Germany 5,000% 1985 Bolivia *10,000% 1989 Argentina 3,100% 1990 Peru 7,500% 1993 Brazil 2,100% 1993 Ukraine 5,000%" These quotations from other web pages are given mainly as examples of what people have in mind when they talk about hyperinflation, and I cannot say just how accurate the figures are. In any case, figures for the purchasing power lost in hyperinflations can only be rough estimates. Numismatics (coin and currency collecting) gives some examples of just how far hyperinflations can go: an information page for currency collectors tells us that, in the Hungarian hyperinflation after World War II, bills for one hundred million trillion pengos were issued (the pengo was the Hungarian currency unit) and bills for one billion trillion pengos were printed but never issued. (I'm using American terms here -- the British express big numbers differently). The story behind the German hyperinflation illustrates how all hyperinflations have come about, and is of particular interest in itself. After World War I, Germany had a democratic government, but little stability. A general named Kapp decided to make himself dictator, and marched his troops and militias into Berlin in an attempted coup d'etat known as the "Kapp Putsch." However, the German people resisted this attempt at dictatorship with nonviolent noncooperation. The workers went out in a general strike and the civil servants simply refused to obey the orders of Kapp and his men. Unable to take command of the country, Kapp retreated and ultimately gave up his attempt. However, the German economy, never very sound, was further disrupted by the conflict surrounding Kapp's putsch and by the strike against it; and production fell and prices rose.

Seoul Urbanization
The population of the metropolis increases because people from rural areas and overseas migrate to the urban areas in large numbers, averaging 7. 6 per cent per year (United Nations Population Division, 2001). Increasing of population in many big cities may causes serious problems even in advanced countries. Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, which more than 11 millions of population, has grown rapidly into a metropolis since the end of Korean War (Kim, 2005). Over population in Seoul creates many problems such as traffic congestion and lack of housing.This essay will discuss about two issues caused by increasing number of population in the city. The first is traffic congestion in Seoul and policies to decline this problem and the second is lack of housing and solution by the government. Traffic congestion is one of the most serious problems in Seoul because of a large number of vehicles in the city (Asianinfo. org, 2000). The increasing number of population in an urban area pro duces a plentiful number of passenger cars on the road. Approximately amount of cars is 2. 8 million (Mok, 2007).In Seoul, the statistic shows that one out of three citizens has a car (Zhang, 2010). This situation brings a big pressure to the traffic in the city. The congestion issue causes a distress of travel to metropolitans. Due to this serious problem, the Seoul metropolitan government has created the key measures to solve the traffic congestion. The first measure is to reform the metropolitan transportation system. There are many kinds of transportation in Seoul such as bus, subway and taxi. Under the revolution and reform of transport system, the government has developed bus services according to route demands.In addition, the extension of subways and establishment of exclusive median bus lane make easier and cheaper for passengers to transfer between buses and subways (Jin, 2005). The other measures are policies and encouraging drivers to reduce traffic volume. For example, the governmentââ¬â¢s measure which encouraging drivers to avoid using of private vehicles for one day of the five-day working week and Seoul Car Free Day campaign which the parking lots of public organization are compulsory closed and drive people to use public transport (Mok, 2007).The government is also searching for a new measure to address the issue of traffic congestion and benefit the megacityââ¬â¢s residents (Cohen, 2009). Apart from traffic congestion, lack of housing is also an important issue caused by population growth in Seoul. Since the end of the Korean War, the nation has focused on increasing only the output within industry (Seoulsouthkorea. jimdo. com, n. d. ) This is the reason for encouraging many people to move into urban centers. A lack of housing for the majority of the new residents has been resulted by rapid urbanization.This is one product of rapid urban development. The influx of population increases need for housing infrastructure. For example, durin g the last few years there have been approximately twice as many households as houses. Those who can find no houses must become squatters and construct shanties and this cause emergence of slum areas in Seoul. The government has an urban development activity with the purpose to clear and relocate squatters from parks and green zones to the outskirts of the city.The measure of Seoulââ¬â¢s government is to allocate houses for the residents which named as Citizen Apartment Building Program (Lee, 2000). Under this program, the government constructs low-rise apartment buildings for squatters and low-income groups. The apartments are intended to be cheap to build and buy. In addition, the government produces low-interest loans that make buyers purchase more easily. In conclusion, urbanization in Seoul began at the end of war. With a rapid growth of the city, Seoul is one of the largest cities in the world with a large amount of population.It can be seen from above examples that increas ing number of population in Seoul causes serious problems such as traffic congestion and lack of housing. However, the government has attempted to address the problems with logical plans and policies.

Whatever Happens Happens for the Best
Whatever Happens, Happens for the Best Once upon a time there was an old man called Bob, who lived alone in a village. He would go about his business alone, even in his old age. He was a nice, friendly man who was liked by all the people in the village. Bob had only one son and he moved to a school far away from the village. Many people in the village always felt sorry for Bob, they knew he must be lonely. The villagers would always ask Bob if his son would ever return. To all of them, Bob would always say, ââ¬Å"Whatever happens, happens for the good. One day, the old manââ¬â¢s son returned to the village. The entire village was very happy for Bob, and a lot of villagers came over to congratulate him. Like always, the old man was polite. He thanked all of them for coming over and said, ââ¬Å"Whatever happens, happens for the good. â⬠A few days had passed, when one day, Bobââ¬â¢s son fell off a horseââ¬â¢s back and broke his leg. Once again the entire village came ov er to Bobââ¬â¢s house to visit his son. And once again the old man thanked them for their care and said, ââ¬Å"Whatever happens, happens for the good. Some of the villagers were surprised to hear this and wondered what good could there possibly be in a broken leg. A few days later, a small army of the local king came to the village and made all the young healthy men join the army. When they came to Bobââ¬â¢s house they found his son with a broken leg. So they left him behind. Once again, all the villagers came to the old manââ¬â¢s house to congratulate him for his good luck. And like always, the old man thanked them for their care and said, ââ¬Å"Whatever happens, happens for the good.

Consequences of the Peloponnesian War Research Paper
Consequences of the Peloponnesian War - Research Paper Example Although this observation by Thucydides lacked the advantage of hindsight, his statement now carries validity, as the Peloponnesian War had many immediate and lasting effects, which this paper will attempt to determine. In order to properly understand the consequences of the Peloponnesian War, the causes and course of the war must be known. In Donald Kaganââ¬â¢s On the Origins of War and Preservation of Peace, he argues that the causes of all war are sourced from ââ¬Å"fear, honor, and interestâ⬠(On the Origins 6), and this holds true with the Peloponnesian War. Athens and Sparta were two of the most powerful Greek city-states in the 5th century B.C., and they were on opposite sides of the ââ¬Å"power blocâ⬠due to the formation of the Delian League and the Peloponnesian League. The Delian League eventually became the Athenian Empire, was originally made to combat the threat of the Persian Empire (The Outbreak 2); the Peloponnesian League was formed by Sparta to comba t the rising threat of Athens (Thucydides, Hammond, Rhodes 476). Rather than combining their respective power and influence, the two city states became opposed factions within the Hellenic World. While there are many intricate and underlying causes to the Peloponnesian War, Thucydides and numerous modern historians agree, to the best of their knowledge, that the main cause of the war was ââ¬Å"Spartan fear of Athenian powerâ⬠(Thucydides, Hammond, Rhodes 477). Because of the threat of the growing Athenian Empire, in hindsight it became evident that the war was inevitable ââ¬â the Athenian power became an object of fear that the Spartans could not ignore. The Peloponnesian War spanned across a period of twenty seven years, encompassing numerous theaters, battles and campaigns that cannot be explained entirely in this paper. This paper will outline a brief summary of the war that will be used to help determine the consequences of the conflict. Athens was aware of the fact th at they could not outright defeat the Spartan army, thus, they built a walled corridor between their city and their port of Piraeus, which the Athenians resided within in an attempt to wait out the Spartan army and outlast them in a war of attrition (Daniel 74). Since the Spartans could not breach the walls of their enemy and the Athenians could not outlast the Spartans, the war resulted to a series of Athenian naval raids and Spartan attacks into Athenian land with the goal of destroying vital crops and resources (Daniel 74). After a plague within the Athenian walls that led to the death of the Athenian war leader Pericles, Alcibiades, a new Athenian leader, took the reins of the Athenian forces, and drastically altered the Athenian plan of action for the war. Alcibiades decided to change from a defensive strategy to an offensive one, and thus ordered an invasion of the city of Syracuse on the island of Sicily, which, due to bad leadership, organization, and excellent Spartan defen se, turned out to be a failure (Daniel 75). The failed campaign resulted in the destruction of the Athenian fleet and army, and ultimately resulted in the Athenians losing the war that they had started (Gombrich 63). First, this paper will analyze the immediate effects of the war on both Athens and Sparta. As history has seen in numerous instances, being defeated in a war has seemingly endless and perpetual

Globalization for fashion brand Charlotte Olympia Essay
Globalization for fashion brand Charlotte Olympia - Essay Example Evidently, the growing need for different fashion trend is a pull factor that has instituted internationalisation of the business. As such, inception into the china market is a prudent approach for the firm. For example, Nike is a renowned product in the world due to its awareness campaign, online marketing approaches, global presence and brand strategy. However, the firm has to incept reluctance action since it has to conduct a series of market researches to ascertain the viability of the market. Incidentally, Charlotte Olympia has an established store in the United Kingdom, and it is among the advanced shops in the fashion industry. Thus, this paper will focus on the possible avenues that should be used in introduction of Olympia brand in the global perspective especially in China. For Olympia brand to grow in the china and Europe market, the administration has to involve various perspectives to achieve a substantial share. Notably, many businesses have both short term and long-term priorities to thrive in trade and this are some of the core factors that define success. For example, the firm may consider introducing of new product lines since the customers are aware of their presence. For example, Charlotte Olympia brand primarily focused on womenââ¬â¢s footwear and accessories. However, the firm has other labels for young girls and slipper for men, which enhances the identity of the products that use the name. Thus, the first approach is aggregation, where the company uses the distinctive processes used in the original country to attract a larger demand in a new nation (Gregory 2010:8). Incidentally, the consumer behaviours are similar in different states, and this allows different establishments to use the identical methods in different marketplaces. For example, the management of Leviââ¬â¢s creates an emotional connection to enhance the relevance of brand in different markets and guarantee loyalty. Incidentally, Charlotte Olympia in United Kingdom has six
